2.007: Introduction to Robots, Design and Manufacturing I
In 2.007, we are introduced to design and manufacturing by building a robot to complete various tasks on a "game board" or obstacle course.
Through this class, I developed competence and self-confidence as a design engineer through an emphasis on the creative design process bolstered by application of physical laws. I completed the project by active learning via quick prototyping while remaining on schedule and within budget. Robustness and manufacturability were heavily emphasized. I learned about idea generation, estimation, concept selection, visual thinking, computer-aided design (CAD), mechanism design, machine elements, basic electronics, technical communication, and ethics.
Strategy
My strategy was to pick up the flag and then raise it, and place it on top of the light tower pillar (pictured below).
My Design
Motor system
Chassis System
Front wheel
Motorized back wheels
Scissor Lift System
Actuating System
Bearings and Joints
Aluminum rods
Aluminum framing
Flag Holder
Flag extender
This required accurate positioning in the box before the round started.
Design Requirements
Lift the system to the stop of the pillar
Place the flag onto the top of the pillar
Drive Forward
Reduce the bounce of the robot when the scissor lift fully extended
Keep the flag attached to the robot
Move the Lanterns
Lessons Learned
Prototype as much as possible
CAD everything first to make sure it works when you finalize your design
Simple is better
Prepare as much as possible for the worst to occur, time management is key
